Affidavit signed by Arthur Goldberg, Police Officer, and Israel Goldberg, Conductor (presumably related to Mary Goldberg Samuels)

The attached handwritten application, apparently made out by Sam, was sworn to on Sept. 21, 1906.

It lists his name at the top as Sam Semuels, a shoe maker in Lynn Mass.

He was born at Hanopol(?) (presumably Annapol) in the county of Zittomec(?) in Russia on or about Sept. 20, 1887

He was 19 years old on the day of the application.

The renunciation of loyalty to Edward VII, King of the United Kingdom, is crossed out, and replaced with “nickols czar of Russia”

The application is signed Sam Sommiels, with what appears to be a second “m” blacked out.

The oath of allegiance is signed Sam Somuils, dated May 4, 1916, and citizenship granted that day.

1920 census

In the 1920 census, the head of household is listed as Charles. It is possible that this was a mistake, as the earlier marriage certificate and naturalization papers, and all later documentation, indicate his name was Samuel. However, we had some previous indication that David Samuels had a son “Charles” (no further information), so it is possible that at some point he went by this name.

1957 letter from Mary to William and Fannie Samuels

This is a letter from Mary, at 5823 Webster St., Philadelphia, Pa., dated January 25, 1957.

Mary describes the situations of Goldie, Dan, Herman, and Bernie and their children. She then invites William and Fannie to Ruth’s marriage in April, even though the date has not yet been set. She says she has written also to Rose Frager, and would like Dorothy’s address. It is signed “Your loving sister, Mary Samuels.”

1957 letter from Bettie Samuels to William and Fannie Samuels

The invitation from the previous letter was obviously accepted, as witnessed by the thank you letter from Bettie Samuels.

Samuel and Mary headstone

In English and in Hebrew. I believe that the Hebrew for Sam reads “Bar David,” meaning that he is the son of David.
